Carnival, also called "Carnestoltes" in Catalonia, is a celebration linked to the lunar calendar. This festivity, deeply rooted in Catalan culture, begins with the arrival of Lardero Thursday and the appearance of the emblematic figure of the Carnival king. The festivities extend until Ash Wednesday, when the traditional burial of the sardine ceremony takes place, thus marking the beginning of the Lent period, a time historically associated with fasting and penance.

During Carnival, which is experienced with intensity and in different ways depending on each location, as in Almenar, the norm is disinhibition and joy. The population dresses up in costumes, indulges in dancing, singing and all kinds of celebrations, reflecting the spirit of freedom and festivity that characterizes this time of year.
