Aplec Sardanista in Montblanc
The sardana has had a prominent presence in Montblanc since the beginning of the 20th century. The first steps of sardana in the town date back to 1903, when it was danced to the sound of a piano. Shortly after, in 1907, this instrument was replaced by the copla, consolidating the sardana as one of the most deeply rooted cultural expressions. However, during the Franco regime, this dance was relegated to the category of "regional dance," losing some of its identifying significance. It was only in the 1950s, thanks to the efforts of the Casal Montblanquí to preserve and promote Catalan culture, that it made a strong comeback. In 1962, the Sardanista Group was created as a section of the Museum-Archive, giving a new impetus to this tradition.
Initially, the Aplec de la Sardana was held at the San José Chapel, but over the years it moved to the town's historic center. Today, this event takes place on the first weekend of July and brings together dancers and sardana enthusiasts from Montblanc and neighboring towns.
