Alcanar Quinquennial Celebrations 2024

Since its establishment in 1944, the Alcanar Quinquennial Festival has been held uninterruptedly every five years, specifically in years ending in 4 and 9. This year the Quinquennial Festival will be held from 1 to 14 October.

In Quinquenales, modernity and tradition come together in harmony in the same temporal space.

These festivities are a great celebration, the banner and symbol of Alcanar's identity. The arrival of the Virgin to Alcanar is one of the most emotional moments for all citizens, marked by an impressive white fireworks display that officially inaugurates the festivities.

The people of Canareus, Canarevas, Casenses and Casensas meet again in neighbourhood meetings to prepare the handmade floral decorations, the carpets of coloured sawdust, the altars, etc., with the aim that, once again, the spectacular ornamentation of the streets will leave all visitors speechless. All the inhabitants of the municipality will relive, once again, the collective feeling that drives them to work together with the strength of a united people.

Traditional Festival of National Interest

The Quinquennial of Alcanar are included in the catalogue of the festive heritage of Catalonia and were declared a Traditional Festival of National Interest in 2010. In 1939, the town of Alcanar made a promise to the new image of the Virgin of the Remedy to celebrate these festivals every five years. According to the Catalogue of the Festive Heritage of Catalonia, during the Quinquennial Festivals, the Virgin of the Remedy is lowered in a pilgrimage from her hermitage to the town.
