The Day dates back to the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in which it was proposed to declare a date dedicated to this issue. Each year, UN-Aigua, the entity that coordinates the Organization's work on water and sanitation, establishes a theme for the Day corresponding to a current or future challenge.
