Saturday, May 3: The double border: Portbou and Walter Benjamin.
At the outbreak of the Second World War, Portbou, a border town that was the exit route for many Republicans at the end of the Civil War, became one of the main entry routes for many European Jewish citizens and anti-fascist resistance fighters fleeing the horror of the Nazis. We will visit the cemetery and the “Pasajes” monument by Dani Karavan, dedicated to the memory of the German philosopher of Jewish descent Walter Benjamin.
Meeting point: in front of the tourist office, Portbou.
OTHER SCHEDULED DEPARTURES:
- Saturday 7 June: Culture in exile: the Catalan Cultural Exile Interpretation Centre, exile memorial spaces in the town of Agullana and the Can Palau bunker.
- Saturday 5th July: Paths of exile: monuments of Vajol, Mina Canta and Coll de Manrella.
- Saturday 6 September: Argelès Camp Memorial and Elna Maternity Hospital.
- Saturday 11th October: Fleeing on foot: climb to Coll de Lli.
- Saturday, November 1: Maquis Route (1): San Iscle de Colltort (Sant Feliu de Pallerols, Garrotxa).
