Recently, the building of the Canta de la Vajol Mine has been revalued in relation to its role during the Spanish Civil War in terms of the evacuation of the economic and artistic heritage of the Republic. Its opening to the public has been a further, but definitive, step in its dignification as a space of memory, a process that began decades ago.
In 1937, the Canta mine in La Vajol was seized and a fortified building was built as a shelter and storage facility, initially with funds from the Ministry of Finance and the Caja de Reparaciones, and later also from the Junta Central del Tesoro Artístico, which used warehouses in Figueres, Perelada and La Vajol. For months, a group of workers from Cartagena carried out the conditioning and construction work at the Canta mine under the direction of the architect and lieutenant of the People's Army of the Republic, Juan Negrín Mijailov, son of the President of the Government, Juan Negrín López. The main function of the bunkerized building was to provide access for temporary storage of these economic goods, gold and jewels, and artistic goods, via a freight elevator, in the armored chamber that was set up inside the mine.
