A unique story, with salt and the Pyrenees as protagonists

The Gerri de la Sal Museum is a space dedicated to the history and culture of salt, highlighting the importance of this industry in the Town of Gerri de la Sal. Located in a picturesque place in the Catalan Pyrenees, this museum is located in a building that, over the centuries, has witnessed the evolution of techniques and uses related to salt production.

History of the building

The building of the Gerri Salt Museum was formerly a salt warehouse, also called Real Alfolí de Gerri. The space has deep roots in local history. Dating back to the 18th century, the space was arranged to manage part of the salt preparation process, produced from the area's salt flats, a key economic activity that contributed to the prosperity of the town for many years.

Permanent exhibitions

Currently, the museum's permanent contents allow you to discover the salt production process, from its extraction to its marketing. Among these exhibits, the recreation of a traditional salt mine stands out, where visitors can learn how traditional technology was used to obtain salt, as well as its economic and social importance in the region. Along the same lines, the history of the town of Gerri is delved into so that the visitor understands how linked the town has been in the salt world. For this purpose, a representative model of the town in 1900 and an audiovisual room are used.

Activities and cultural offer

The cultural offer of the Gerri de la Sal Museum is completed with a series of activities for all audiences, such as general guided tours, both in the old warehouse and in the salt mines, an escape room aimed at a family audience and temporary exhibitions inside the building itself. Everything, obviously, linked to the production and history of salt.

museum store

In addition, the museum has a shop where you can purchase local products and a selection of items related to salt.
