The organization of the territory in ancient Layetania: settlement of Barcelona
By Maria Carme Belarte Franco (ICREA, ICAC and IEC).
The territory of the present-day regions of Barcelona was occupied in Iberian times (6th-2nd century BC) by the Layetan tribe. As in other territories on the coast of Catalonia, the Iberian population was organised into settlements of different categories and functions.
Some of these centres were real cities, the largest of which covered several hectares, such as Barkeno (Montjuïc, Barcelona) and Ilturo (Burriac, Cabrera de Mar), although there were also other smaller cities, such as Puig Castell (Cànoves and Samalús) or Turó de Ca n'o.
A third group was made up of settlements with surfaces smaller than 1 ha, comprising fortified villages (such as Puig Castellar in Santa Coloma or Castellruf in Sant Fost de Campsentelles) and settlements with economic functions (Turó del Vent in Llinars del Vallès). Finally, at the base of the pyramid was the rural settlement, made up of small farms scattered across flat areas, such as the settlement of Can Calvet, in Santa Coloma de Gramenet.
In this lecture we will analyze the characteristics of the different types of settlements and their respective roles under the control of the main cities, which served as capitals of the territory.
