Espai Columba - Art medieval andorrà Santa Coloma d'Andorra
The Espai Columba is a museum located in Santa Coloma, Andorra la Vella, dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of Andorran medieval art, especially Romanesque mural paintings. Opened in 2019, this cultural facility's mission is to safeguard, conserve and present the mural paintings of the apse of the church of Santa Coloma, as well as various liturgical objects from Andorran churches.
The Espai Columba houses the original 12th-century mural paintings from the apse of the church of Santa Coloma, considered one of the most important examples of Andorran Romanesque. These paintings were removed in the 1930s, sold and dispersed among various private collections, but were finally recovered and returned to their place of origin.
In addition to the mural paintings, the museum displays various liturgical objects from Andorran churches, offering a complete overview of the country's medieval sacred art. The exhibition is complemented by audiovisual and interactive resources that allow visitors to gain a deeper understanding of Romanesque art and its historical context.
The visit to the Espai Columba is complemented by a visit to the church of Santa Coloma, one of the oldest and most unique in Andorra. The temple offers a video mapping projection system that allows visitors to see and experience the original interior of the church and show them its approximate appearance in the 12th century.
