Església de Sant Miquel d'Engolasters Escaldes-Engordany
This 12th-century Lombard Romanesque church is one of the most iconic examples of Andorra's medieval architecture.
Its structure combines the simplicity of Romanesque architecture with a unique element: a slender, 17-meter-high bell tower, disproportionate to the nave but fundamental to the complex, becoming a landmark visible from a distance. Built from local stone, it features semicircular arched windows and austere decoration based on Lombard bands and arches.
Inside, the church houses a reproduction of its original Romanesque murals, now preserved in the MNAC. These paintings depict an imposing scene of Christ in majesty, surrounded by the tetramorph, with particularly interesting iconography: the Archangel St. Michael appears fused with the symbol of St. Matthew, an unusual representation that lends a uniqueness to the ensemble.
The setting in which Sant Miquel de Engolasters stands is another of its great attractions. Situated at an altitude of 1,500 meters, the church blends into the mountain landscape, although its silhouette stands out clearly against the natural background.
From this spot, the panoramic views over the Andorra la Vella valley are exceptional, adding scenic value to this temple, which, beyond its artistic and historical interest, remains a space for contemplation and contemplation.
